Meals at the Lodge

Food That Fuels the Adventure

At Black Bear Island Lodge, dining is never an afterthought. Diana Besaw brings decades of experience — and a genuine love of cooking — to every meal served at the lodge. Guests consistently rave about the food, and for good reason: everything is made from scratch, with generous portions and real home-cooked flavor.

Breakfast gets you fueled and ready for a full day on the water. Lunches are legendary shore lunches — freshly caught fish fried streamside over an open flame, with all the fixings. Evenings bring hearty dinners back at the lodge, where the day's stories are swapped over a hot meal and good company.

Morning at the Lodge

Start the Day Right

Every morning at Black Bear Island Lodge begins with a full, made-from-scratch breakfast. Eggs cooked to order, crispy bacon, home fries, toast, fresh fruit — the kind of spread that sets you up for a long, productive day on the water.

Diana and her team have breakfast ready and waiting when you come in from the morning air. Hot coffee, a full plate, and good company before you head out — it's the best way to start any day in the wilderness.

A Canadian Tradition

The Shore Lunch Tradition

No wilderness fishing trip is complete without a shore lunch. Your guide will find a scenic spot along the Churchill River System, build a fire, and fry up the morning's catch right on the bank. Fresh northern pike or walleye, golden and crispy from the cast iron, served with all the sides — it's a meal you'll talk about long after you've gone home.

Shore lunches are included with your guided fishing package and are one of the most beloved parts of the Black Bear Island Lodge experience.

End of Day

Evenings at the Lodge

After a full day on the water, there's nothing better than coming back to a hot, home-cooked dinner. Diana and her team put out a full sit-down meal every evening — rotating comfort classics, hearty mains, and always something fresh from the oven.

Dinner is where the day's stories come out. Guests gather around the table, swap fish tales, and wind down together before heading back to the cabins. It's one of the things that makes Black Bear Island Lodge feel less like a resort and more like a home.

The Chef Behind the Meals

Diana's Kitchen

Diana Besaw and her team are the heart of the dining experience at Black Bear Island Lodge. A retired ER/ICU nurse who traded the hospital for the wilderness kitchen, Diana brings the same precision and care to her cooking that she brought to patient care — and guests feel it in every bite.

Her baking is legendary. Fresh pies, layered cakes, homemade breads, and desserts that make you forget you're a hundred miles from the nearest town — Diana's kitchen is one of the things that keeps guests coming back.

Everything is made from scratch, with generous portions and the kind of flavor that only comes from someone who genuinely loves to cook. No one goes hungry at Black Bear Island Lodge.
